Description

Set amidst the vast expanse of 600 acres of campus owned by BEML Truck Division in Hebbal Industrial Estate in Mysore, the Major Hangar building was proposed as an expansion inside Asia’s largest dump truck manufacturing factory. The Hangar building project was won through a national level design competition held for selection of the Architect. The 1.6 million sqft Pre-engineered building facility will include a Factory, an Office block, Gas bank building and an exclusive substation, all connected with the main structure through inter-linking corridors.

The Major Hangar will have four bays of 22.5m each with 4 individual EOT cranes of 100T capacity each supported on the PEB columns, which were an essential part of the manufacturing process. The swooping arched roof was designed so as to give a restrained yet expressive look to the purely functional façade. The fluidic wave form roof structure of the loading and unloading bays at the two gable ends of the building was meant to complement the roof and also to give the structure a distinctive feel. The flooring is designed to carry a load of 5 Tonnes per sqm.

One of the key challenges in this project was to manage the steep contours of the terrain. The solution adapted was to make use of the lowest point in the terrain as a basement area for which the Client found a use to be part of the operational needs, thereby reducing about 5 m of expensive and substantial land filling.
