Description

The land on which the stadium was constructed was gifted to the Tamilnadu Cricket Association by Mr. M.A. Chidambaram. He had commissioned Pithavadian and Partners for the Design Consultancy. The Architectural Design was handled by Mr. Pithavadian who was supported by his Partner, Mr. J. Subramaniam.

The plan for the stadium was developed in segments, ultimately forming a circular pattern. The TNCA based on funds which usually became available after every Test match, constructed one pavilion at a time. It took from 1970 to 1978 to complete the entire construction.

The completely reinforced concrete structure consisted of cast in situ vertical columns and connecting beams having a cantilever of 9 m. Pre-cast roofing shells were used to cover the galleries and the MAC Stadium became the 1st stadium in the Country to have completely covered galleries. The entire stadium and other infrastructure were designed by Pithavadian and Partners with indigenous resources.
